The NBD SMART Debit Card comes with a new vertical design which indicates that the card will be inserted rather than swiped. The small metallic square on the left hand side of the card, right above the card number, is the microprocessor chip that makes the card Smart. This is an added security feature on the card that requires a PIN to complete a purchase transaction, however, the magnetic strip will be retained to allow use of the new NBD SMART  Debit Card at merchant locations that do not yet accept CHIP and/or PIN. For this reason, the card needs to be immediately signed on the signature panel upon card receipt.

Using the new NBD SMART Debit Card will be similar to performing any normal purchase transaction, except that the card may be inserted in the terminal and the cardholder might be asked to enter their PIN via a PIN PAD to authorize the transaction instead of providing a signature. Use of PIN to confirm a transaction, combined with the chip’s ability to verify that the card used is authentic, will significantly improve security and reduce card fraud as it will ensure that the card cannot be misused, should it be lost or stolen.

By using the NBD SMART Debit Card at any merchant, locally and internationally, the cardholder will earn and accumulate cash value worth 0.4% on the purchase amount.

Enrollment will be immediate once the new NBD SMART Debit Card is activated and the accumulated cash value will be automatically credited at the end of each quarter to the cardholder’s NBD bank account.
